FAQs

  • Why do I need this coverage if I have homeowners insurance?
Homeowners insurance may offer some coverage for gun-related incidents, but it will not safeguard you from criminal charges—even if you acted in self-defense. Additionally, legal fees, damages, and other expenses related to a civil suit may quickly exceed the liability limit included with most standard homeowners insurance policies.
  • How does CitizenDefend coverage differ from a legal defense fund?
Legal defense funds, financed by its members, are typically for acts of self-defense only. CitizenDefend insurance protects you in more ways and in more places—anywhere in the U.S. that you can legally carry or use a firearm—including public and private hunting grounds, shooting ranges, gun clubs, and other recreational sites. Even in cases of accidental discharge and self-defense.
  • Is my spouse covered?

We provide coverage for your spouse when acting in self-defense, either at home or away—at no additional cost.

  • Does it matter where I live?
CitizenDefend coverage is currently available in all U.S. states except New York.
  • How soon after I purchase a CitizenDefend policy am I covered?

There is no waiting period. You can get CitizenDefend insurance protection quickly, easily and affordably online 24/7, effective today.

  • When does the financial benefit begin for self-defense?
If you are acquitted or dismissed of all criminal charges, we will reimburse you for criminal defense costs up to your policy limit.
  • What types of firearms may be covered? And how many?
We provide affordable coverage for any legally possessed firearms (other than fully automatic firearms) in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws. There is no limit to the number of firearms.
  • Can members of the armed forces and law enforcement be covered?

Yes—however, coverage is not available for liability arising out of your employment, occupation, profession, trade, or work.

  • What is the Revocation Expense Limit?
You will be paid up to $2,500 for a hearing or appearance if a licensing authority issues an order to revoke ownership of your firearm (as a result of a covered incident).
  • How do criminal costs and civil liability differ?

Criminal costs arise if you are charged with breaking the law. A civil liability lawsuit occurs when an alleged victim seeks money for damages for which you are potentially responsible. In a gun-related incident, you could be exposed to both criminal costs and civil lawsuits.

  • Who will hire my attorney if I need help?

If you are involved in a civil liability lawsuit, we will appoint an attorney. We have a network of skilled attorneys throughout the U.S. ready to defend you. If you are arrested, you are responsible for hiring your attorney.

  • Is theft of my firearm covered?
No, CitizenDefend does not offer coverage for theft of firearms. To protect your firearms (including ammunition, safes, and accessories) from theft, burglary, and other causes of loss, visit Collectibles Insurance Services and get a quote today.
  • What are the exclusions to the policy?
We do not provide coverage for intentional injury (except for injury resulting from acts of self-defense), contractual liability, war, professional services, liability arising out of your employment, criminal acts, paint gun activities, injuries as a result of you or your spouse being under the influence, relatives, and household occupants. This is not a complete list—please refer to the policy for coverage terms and conditions.
  • Are there any membership fees?

There are no membership fees or requirements.

  • Who underwrites the policy?
CitizenDefend is administered by J.H. Ferguson & Associates, LLC. Coverage is underwritten by one of its affiliate companies, depending on the state where the non-admitted coverage is provided. The companies are national specialty property and casualty insurers and have consistently earned a group rating of “A” (Excellent) by A.M. Best, the leading rating agency for the insurance industry.
  • Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we offer two convenient options. You can choose to pay semi-annually ($10 service fee with first payment), or pay in full annually.

  • What payment types are accepted?

We accept credit/debit cards and eChecks, with the ability to pay online or over the phone. We also accept checks by mail.
